After decades of thinking I was a cat girl then happening upon the puppy of a sweet mama dog who had been abandoned in the desert of Mercury, Nevada, I realized I was a dog-woman. That sweet little girl, whom I drove 12 straight hours home with, changed my life forever. That was in June 2000, and, of course, I named her Mercury.
Several years later, I was shopping at Broadway Plaza in Creeky Walnuts (Walnut Creek) and as I passed by Macy’s, I encountered a greyhound group. Or, I should say, a greyhound encountered me. He was a grey-colored greyhound which I now know are not usual. I was standing aside just watching and admiring all of them. The next thing I knew, he appeared at my side and just rested his head against my thigh. My heart melted and I wanted instantly to take him home. I patted him and he and I “talked”.
I thought about him for a couple years and low-and-behold, at a Manteca street fair a couple years later, who do I encounter, but Susan!!! I filled out the online application to adopt. I waited with baited-breath hoping I’d be approved to adopt a greyhound. She called and said I was approved and thought she had the perfect boy for me.
I went to see “Hillside” (his racing name – born and raced in Texas. Of course, it was meant to be… my family is Texan). He had an impressive career. 104 races, placed 1st – 4th in about 40% of his races. His lineage went all the way back to Ireland in the 1950’s with lots of winners. (My family is also Irish.)
Unfortunately, Hillside just wasn’t what I was “looking” for. He just didn’t “look” like what I thought a greyhound should look like. So, I went home.
Let me tell you for the next 24-hours, I could not stop thinking about him and I had a huge lump in my throat and heart for him. I called Susan and told her how I felt and she said, “I hate to make you feel worse, but, after you left he’s moped around and it seems like he’s thinking, “I’m left behind again”.
I got him the next weekend!!!! Nov. 3, 2006 is our anniversary. Mercury, Reno and I became a family. Thank you Amazing Greys.
Much love, Monica, Mercury, Reno
