Basic Adoption Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible to adopt, you must meet the following basic requirements.

        • You must be over 21

        • You should own your home or have a rental that allows large dogs. We will need a copy of your lease or a letter from your landlord at some point during the application process.

        • All pets in the household must be current on vaccinations.

        • Your county or city pet limits should not be exceeded (please check this by calling your county animal control office.)

        • You must be able to take on the financial responsibility of owning a dog (typical office visits cost $50 and emergency room fees are about $250 prior to any treatment.)

Other things you should know about working with Amazing Greys Retired Racers

  • A fenced yard is not required.

  • Stairs are okay.

  • The dogs are already crate trained and most are other-dog social.

  • Our dogs are clean and free of fleas and ticks. They have been de-wormed.

  • All our dogs live comfortably in foster homes where they are socialized, taught how to live in a real home, and constantly evaluated and educated. We know our dogs so much better because we live with them.

  • Most of our dogs can be trained to live safely with small dogs and cats. Our foster homes can advise you about the details.

  • We perform a phone interview and home visit for each placement. The better we get to know you, the better we can help with placing the right dog in your home.

  • We prefer that you stay open to which dog you would like to adopt, as our mix is constantly changing, and a better-suited dog might become available during the course of the application process.

  • We follow up with our adopters to offer any help or support that is needed.

  • We send out a monthly newsletter keeping our greyhound families informed.

  • Our adoption fee ($300) is the same regardless of how much the dog has cost us in surgery, orthopedic work, emergency care, or vet bills. This is a bargain considering the work we put into our dogs, and is supported by donations and fundraisers.

  • Donations are always needed, and are tax-deductible. Amazing Greys Retired Racers is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
