Thank you for your interest in a most noble and extraordinary breed of dog. "Amazing Greys" is an all volunteer, non-profit organization, whose goal is to educate the public on the retired racing greyhound. We work closely with the racetrack to find homes for these truly "greyt" dogs.

Our foster home is in Tracy, California, and our adoption service is available to all of Northern California. The dogs stay in our foster home for at least two weeks so we can work up a complete personality profile for every dog.

These greyhounds actually live in our Tracy home where we begin the process of acclimating them to their new life as 45 mile per hour couch potatoes. Then the transition to a new adoptive family is a relatively easy one.

From the Pharaoh Tutankhamen to General Custer, greyhounds have played a major role in history. These dogs have been popular in the circles of the "rich and famous" as well. Frank Sinatra, Leonard Nimoy, Bo Derek, Jayne Mansfield, Dean Martin, and Betty White have all owned greyhounds.

The fastest breed of dog, reaching speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, greyhounds' hunting skills, beauty, and intelligence have been valued by a wide range of cultures from ancient times to today.  Once retired from the racetrack, these dogs make wonderful family companions and are often used as therapy dogs. With their short hair and lean build, they require little grooming, need less exercise than many other breeds, and spend a great deal of time just sleeping. And with a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years, greyhounds have few of the maladies that plague other breeds. They are part of the "sight hound" family, which means that they hunt by sight rather than by smell. As "sight hounds", greyhounds focus on whatever it is they want to chase and, while focused, lose all peripheral vision. In chasing mode, a greyhound will not see traffic coming from either direction. Because of their great speed and their ability to see at least one half mile away, they must be kept on a leash in public or in a totally enclosed area when off leash.
